Travel and fuel
What a jump costs, how long it takes, and every way to refill your tank.
Your ship burns fuel every time you jump to another star system. This page covers what a jump costs, how long it takes, and every way to get fuel back.
What a jump costs
A jump costs 1 fuel for every GU (galactic unit) of distance, divided by your ship's fuel efficiency.
fuel cost = distance ÷ fuel efficiency
A new ship has fuel efficiency 1.0, so a 60 GU jump costs 60 fuel. Costs aren't rounded, so you may see figures like 47.3.
You need at least the full cost in your tank to leave. The whole cost is taken when you depart, and a jump can leave you with exactly 0.
How long a jump takes
A jump takes 1 minute per GU, divided by your ship's speed.
travel time = distance ÷ Star Drive speed (at least 1 minute)
A new ship has speed 1.0, so 60 GU takes 60 minutes. Server-wide speed events can shorten trips further.
When the timer runs out, you arrive. If your tank is empty when you arrive, your ship is stranded.
When you can't jump
You can't start a jump while:
- you're already travelling
- you're docked at a station (undock first)
- any of your pods are out on an expedition
- a discovery is in progress
- you don't have enough fuel
Wormholes
Some systems have a wormhole. Going through one is instant and costs no fuel. If you're docked, you undock automatically.
Your fuel tank
A new ship has a 100-fuel tank, starts full, and has no Fuel Cells. Three ship upgrades help with travel. Each tier adds to the one before it.
| Upgrade | Base | Tier 1 | Tier 2 | Tier 3 | Tier 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel Tank (capacity) | 100 | 150 | 225 | 325 | 475 |
| Fuel Efficiency | 1.0 | 1.25 | 1.5 | 1.75 | – |
| Star Drive (speed) | 1.0 | 1.15 | 1.3 | 1.45 | – |
At full Fuel Efficiency, jumps cost about 57 % of the base price. A bigger tank doesn't fill itself: new capacity starts empty.
Solar recharge
Your ship collects solar power from the star of the system it's in, even while you're away. The fuel is added when you next open the game, up to your tank's capacity.
| Star | Fuel per hour |
|---|---|
| Blue giant | 10 |
| Binary (two yellow stars) | 10 |
| Red giant | 7 |
| Yellow star | 5 |
| Red dwarf | 1 |
| Neutron star | 0.5 |
| Black hole | 0 |
Black holes give no recharge at all. If you run dry next to one, you'll need to refine, use Fuel Cells, or ask for help.
Recharge is counted from the last time you opened the game, at the rate of the system you're recorded in when it's added. Mid-jump, that's the system you left.
Refining fuel
You can refine fuel anywhere, docked or not.
| Refine | Fuel each |
|---|---|
| Helium-3 | 20 |
| Plasma Crystals | 50 |
| Fuel Cell | 50 |
Mine Helium-3 and Plasma Crystals from asteroid belts. You can't refine when your tank is already full.
Watch the tank: every unit you refine is used up even if the tank fills partway through, so anything over capacity is lost. Refining also clears your stranded status.
Buying Fuel Cells
Fuel Cells stay with your ship until you refine them, 50 fuel each. You can hold any number, but you can't trade them.
App Store
| Pack | Fuel Cells | Price | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Top-Up | 1 | $0.99 | 50 |
| Explorer Pack | 4 | $2.99 | 200 |
| Deep Space Expedition | 10 | $4.99 | 500 |
MANA (Decentraland players, paid on Polygon)
| Pack | Fuel Cells | MANA | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Fuel Cell | 1 | 10 | 50 |
| 3 Fuel Cells | 3 | 20 | 150 |
| 10 Fuel Cells | 10 | 50 | 500 |
A MANA purchase is credited once the payment is confirmed on chain. Each payment can only be used once.
Free fuel drops
At events, the game gives away free Fuel Cells. There are two kinds of drop, and you can claim each drop once.
Dispenser drops. For a limited time, use the Fuel Dispenser in the Galaxy Gardeners departure terminal in Decentraland and claim your free cells. You need to be signed in with a wallet, not as a guest, and standing in the scene.
Code drops. Enter a code at the Fuel Dispenser or in the app's fuel store. Codes are 4 to 24 letters, numbers or dashes, and capital letters don't matter.
A drop gives from 1 to 50 Fuel Cells, depending on the event. Some drops:
- have a limited number of claims, and can run out
- only open for players who joined before the drop started
- have a start and end time
If the dispenser is switched off, you can't claim at it or redeem codes there. Codes still work in the app.
What can happen when you claim:
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Success | Done. The cells are in your ship. |
| Already claimed | You've had this one. |
| Sold out | Every claim has been taken. |
| Expired or unknown code | The drop is over, paused, not open yet, or the code is wrong. |
| Not eligible | This drop is only for players who joined before it started. |
| Connect a wallet | Guest accounts can't claim. |
| Dispenser offline | The dispenser is switched off. Try the code in the app. |
If you try too many codes too fast (more than 10 a minute), you'll have to wait.
Worked example
Your ship has a 150 tank (Fuel Tank tier 1), Fuel Efficiency 1.5 (tier 2) and Star Drive 1.15 (tier 1). You have 30 fuel and want to jump 120 GU.
- Cost: 120 ÷ 1.5 = 80 fuel. You only have 30, so you can't go yet.
- Wait it out in a yellow-star system: 5 fuel an hour for 10 hours gets you to 80.
- Or refine 1 Plasma Crystal: 30 + 50 = 80. Enough to go now.
- Travel time: 120 ÷ 1.15 ≈ 104 minutes (1 h 44 m).
- You'll arrive with 0 fuel and be stranded. Refine one more crystal first (up to 130 fuel) to arrive with 50 to spare.
